Keane had been playing through the pain barrier for a few weeks whilst John Mullin and Paul McLaren served suspensions, but following his red card against Mansfield in the FA Cup defeat the decision was taken that Michael needed the problem sorting out.

Talking to themillers.co.uk, physio Denis Circuit explained: "Michael had the operation last Thursday and came out of hospital on Friday. It was different from the usual hernia operation but all being well the recovery time will be about the same, approximately six weeks. So far it looks as if everything has gone well so all being well he should be back in action in time for the busy Christmas period."

Another fitness victim, Gregor Robertson, has now returned to training. Circuit added: "Gregor has been back in training with all the rest of the squad today and unless he gets any unexpected reaction, he should be available again."
