The former England U20 midfielder, on loan for a month, told the Tiser: "The Academy is well regarded but it looks like it's going to be harder for the lads to come through now because the manager sees things differently—he wants to bring in all the experienced players.
"You've got to respect that but I don't want to be part of it and I don't want to sit about doing nothing. I want to play football and if I have to drop down a level to play then I'll do that.
"My situation at Middlesbrough wasn't great. Last year I made 11 appearances in the Premier League (and cups) but even that was stop-start. I played and then got injured and I was in and out of the team towards the end.
"I felt I would be lucky if I made the squad of 18, and at my age and how I believe in myself, I think I'm better than that. I want to prove people wrong at Middlesbrough and I've come here to do that."
Walker, who had a loan spell at Northampton earlier in the season, added: "It's interesting in League Two. The Championship is a lot faster than the Premier League and League Two is a lot faster again. The ball is in the air quite a bit and you need to adjust your game, but if you do manage to get your foot on the ball then players give you a little bit of respect.
"I like to think passing is one of my strengths and I like to get on the ball."
