Moulin Rouge: Chesterfield Review

First win at Saltergate since 1972, first league win over them since 1979, first win in any game for Mick Harford and first three points of the season or not, the only thing we are going to remember this game for in years to come is how soaking wet through we got. You knew the week where we were allocated an uncovered terrace it would be raining at horizontal angles in to our faces for the whole duration of the match.

Of course, none of us mind that we were soaked to the bone and dripping wet as we saw our team win. Personally I forgot what it was like to celebrate a win having seen only three of our five victories last season. It wasn’t only the win that made us sing in the rain, it was the performance. In tough conditions we battled really hard and competed and when we got the ball down we played neat, attractive and incisive passing moves. Lee Williamson is clearly a world class player and will undoubtedly be player of the season and he set up another goal for Butts, which turned out to be the winner.

I am still a little concerned about our lack of ability to, to quote an ex-manager “twist the knife in” when we are on top, it nearly cost us after Graham Laws tried to shaft us (surprise surprise!) and eventually if we continue not to make teams pay we’ll end up on the wrong end of the scoreline. That said, you have to think that we are going to give a few teams a real pasting this year if we do fire in front of goal. Hey, maybe this is me just being greedy. We’ve waited so long for a win maybe I should just be happy with the three points. Tough game against Bradford next week, now boys it’s time to give us something to shout about at Millmoor.
