Arsenal moved into the fourth round of the Carling Cup by virtue of a thrilling penalty shoot out against First Division battlers Rotherham.

The Gunners won through 9-8 on penalties after drawing 1-1 with Ronnie Moore after 120 minutes of open play.

The Gunners went ahead after 11 minutes following a slick move down the left where Jerome Thomas fed Sylvain Wiltord who ran into the left side of the Rotherham penalty area. And, with a clever turn, he laid the ball on for Kanu who, in turn, spotted Jeremie Aliadiere running on the outside and the Nigerian set up the youngster to shoot home from five yards out.

Arsene Wenger fielded a host of young players including Cesc Fabregas who became the youngest ever Arsenal player to take part in a competitive first team gameRotherham battled hard and were awarded for their grit and determination with a last minute goal that sent the game into extra time.

Arsenal's Gael Clichy for once lost his player and Chris Sedgwick sent over a cross into the Arsenal penalty area which the Gunners failed to deal with and Darren Byfield scored from close range.

Extra time failed to produce any goals with Rotherham clearly holding out for penalties.

There were plenty of incidents in the game, particularly in extra time when goalkeeper Mike Pollitt was sent off for handling a goal-bound shot outside the area.

Their tactic looked to be a prudent one when Wiltord missed the opening penalty and Rotherham moved ahead but a miss from substitute John Mullin meant that the shoot out went into sudden death.

Wiltord was able to make amends for his earlier miss with the scores on 8-8 Rotherham's Chris Swailes hit a tame spot kick which was gratefully gathered by Graham Stack.

Wiltord then stepped up clearly having put his earlier miss behind him and struck the ball sweetly into the bottom corner of the net to the cheers of the Highbury crowd.
