Hope Springs Eternal - Grist

Have had them all, “unfashionable Rotherham”, “ a new dawn”, “turning the corner”, and “a fresh start”, etc, etc, etc, all cast out ad nausea by the New Board, RUST and their supporters.

T

UNITED
he fans in turn resort to the armoury of standard replies like “heard it all before”, “what about the pies”, “the kits too orange” and “it’s Henson’s fault”

So what I’m saying is this. Let us draw a line underneath all of the events before we blunder down a path of self-destruction. Let us also view our expectations with a thick layer of realism. We are Rotherham United a football club in a town tacked onto a major city with two bigger football clubs. We are not Arsenal (even though our new kit looks like them), or Chelsea or Manchester United.

We are never going to get Arsene Wenger or Alex Ferguson as manager or anybody remotely like them. We aren’t going to play in a ground like the Nou Camp or the San Siro; neither will we be signing Rooney, Reyes or Ronaldo.

What we need now is to live up to our name, and for those of you that’s forgotten, it still is Rotherham UNITED, not Millers05, C F Booth and Co, Earth Mortgages or RUST. Now more than ever we must be UNITED.

We must put the petty squabbling behind us and look forward to a period of change and assist where we can to help that change to take place. There’s loads of tired clichés I can use for this and I’m sure you can pick your own, but following the recent fans forum even sceptical old Grist felt a bit happier.

So let’s go forward, let’s be a supporter not a dead weight and let us make Rotherham United a team worth supporting and one we can be proud of.

One final cliché, “hope springs eternal”
