But, more importantly for the Millers, Alan Knill's side gave themselves a huge survival boost by seeing off the Swans in their own back-yard.

Rotherham were just one place outside the League One trapdoor before the trip to South Wales, but an own goal from Garry Monk on 16 minuets and Gregor Robertson's 30th minute strike has handed the men from Milmoor a very welcome three points.

But the result means Swansea have virtually no chance of grabbing a top two place while they have also slipped out of the top six places.

The Swans' slippery form of late meant the game was a must-win affair for both sides and Owain Tudur Jones could have handed the hosts the lead after just two minutes when he almost connected with a neat through ball, although he did bring a save out of former Swan Neil Cutler ten minutes later with a testing half-volley.

But just moments later, Rotherham got the start they had dreamed of when Monk's push on John Mullin allowed Lee Williamson to swing in the free-kick and the Swansea centre-back inexplicably sliced the ball past Willy Gueret and into his own net.

The goal did little for Swansea's visible nerves and 14 minutes later they conceded again as Martin Butler beat the offside trap to cross, and although Gueret looked to have cut out the delivery, Robertson fired low into the bottom left corner.

It could have been even worse had Butler managed to beat Gueret when he was put clear by Williamson on 33 minutes but boss Alan Knill would have been more than happy at the break with their two goal advantage.

Swansea looked better after the interval but it did take a double substitution from manager Kenny Jackett to raise the tempo as Roberto Martinez and Bayo Akinfenwa made way for Rory Fallon and Leon Knight.

But despite the greater threat, some harried midfield play from Stephen Quinn and some robust defending from David Worrell kept the Yorkshiremen's goal intact and only a late block from Adrian Forbes stopped Paul Shaw making it three on 70 minutes.
