Post Match Reaction of Coventry Game

"I thought we deserved something from the game because we created the better chances in the game. We had two free headers in the first half, Chris Swailes hit the post when he should have scored and Shaun Barker could have scored. The fighting spirit was there again and in the end we could have nicked a win when Michael Proctor got in after we had cut them to shreds and he was disappointed he didn’t finish off. If he had scored then we would probably be safe but we like to do it the hard way.”

Ronnie was not please with the referee’s performance, commenting that the referee got some major decisions wrong, including the disallowed goal from Shaun Barker. He was also unhappy ay Coventry were awarded an indirect free kick on the six yard line for a back pass by Shaun Barker. He commented: “he gave an indirect free kick on the six yard line and there was no way Shaun meant it as a back pass - if he did he should be in the circus, it was unbelievable.”

Ronnie had no problems with the penalty decision though, and homework paid off when Mike Pollitt dove the correct way to save McSheffrey’s penalty:

“I had no moans about the penalty, we had them watched the other week and we drew the penalty on the board from the last time McSheffrey took a penalty so Mike Pollitt went the right way, I told him to go that way!”

In general Ronnie was pleased with the performance in such hard conditions, especially that of Goalkeeper Mike Pollitt, and acknowledges that safety is now in our own hands.

“It was very warm and tiring out there and it’s a big pitch but both teams did well. Now we have plenty of time to rest up and safety is still in our own hands. It would have been nice if we had taken three points though to take us to 53 points.

In the last minute I don’t know what Andy Monkhouse was doing to let the ball go over his head but Polly made a magnificent save with almost the last kick. He was magnificent all afternoon and I think we have the best keeper in the division.”

“Now we have two big games left, they are both winnable if we play the way we can but we might not need a win against
Burnley because if Walsall lose at Palace then they would have to beat us by ten goals in the last match - just like it was at Crewe two years ago.

We have to be nice and bright and positive against Burnley next week and then hopefully we can have a drink afterwards.”
