Internet Millers 4:2
Rotherham Athletic

The Internet Millers ran out 4-2 winners in a good game of football that gave the whole squad a good run out before Worldnet. Due to low number of players on the Rotherham Athletic side a number of IM players mingled in with the opposition throughout the match.

However, the Internet Millers started with a strong looking first 11 for the first 30 minutes and whereas created a large number of chances only managed to convert just the one.

Early on Jebu hit a stinging volley that the keeper parried onto the crossbar and whereas it looked close to going over the line no one argued in this friendly atmosphere.

There was a string of chances made with Gaz going through one on one after some neat interplay between the midfield and front line but the keeper saving well with his legs.

Steve Burns broke clear of the defence after being slipped in by Jebu but once again the keeper stood tall and the deadlock remained.

Eventually, the deadlock was broken as a well timed run by Steve sent him through one on one again. This time Steve Burns rounded the keeper and blasted home from close range.

Jebu almost put his name on the scoresheet not soon after with a lovely cross by Steve leaving Jebu in two minds whether to head or volley, in the end it rolled harmlessly to the keeper.

It was then Jammers turn to miss a 1 on 1 with it becoming a little frustrating after some nice build up play.

Steve R and Andy hit a few driving low shots from the edge of the box and as the 30 minute mark approached a number of changes were made and the formation switched to 442.

The Internet Millers lost a bit of shape and Rotherham Athletic looked lively. However the defence stood well and we went in 1-0 up at half time.

HALF TIME: Internet Millers 1:0
Rotherham Athletic

The half time team talk was strange, had we taken our chances as well as normal the game would have been over but with a lot of internet millers playing for
Rotherham athletic and a string of changes made it would take a while to settle again.

However, not soon after the break Chris Grist scored with a lovely header to make it 2-0, hitting the underside of the crossbar but this time there being no mistaking it crossing the line.

However, for the next 20 minutes the game got a little scrappy. Rotherham Athletic started to play some neat interplay in a very much 5 a side style and troubled the internet millers back 4. This was exploited down our right when some good play found a Rotherham Athletic player to bang home from about 10 yards out.

At 2-1 up the Internet Millers side was reshuffled once more for the last 30 minutes with everyone in the team now having a good amount of time on the pitch. It paid dividends as a through ball by Jebu found strike partner Steve who rounded the keeper in neat fashion to score his 2nd of the night to make the score 3:1.

However, Rotherham Athletic didn’t lie down and continued to knock the ball about well. Internet Millers looking dangerous on the break but having lost a bit of shape throughout the game it was inevitable that we would be on the back foot. The pressure told as Rotherham Athletic made it 3-2 to keep the game exciting right to the death.

Over the last 10 minutes Internet Milers got a stronger grip on the game and started to create more chances. This took pressure off the defence and in the last minute the game was rounded up with a neat passing move that ended with Steve Burns unselfishly squaring for Jebu to bang into an empty net, making a 4:2 final score.

Final Score: Internet Millers 4:2
Rotherham Athletic

Scorers: Steve Burns 2 Jebu 1 Chris Grist 1

Post Match Analysis

There is some great debate on the forums about the respective
4-4-2 and 3-5-2 formations so I won’t go into too much detail about them. Overall the game was a good run out for the entire squad and kept us ticking over to Worldnet. Losing the shape of the team all the time did not help and we didn’t have our most deadly shooting boots on early in the game which meant it was much tighter than we would have hoped later on. Still it was a friendly and played in good spirit. Good luck to Rotherham Athletic in the South Yorkshire Amateur League next year on Saturday afternoons and hopefully we can get a few more friendlies arranged in the future.
