Day 1 – The Group Stage

Rotherham vs Scunthorpe

A very drunk Rotherham side turned up for this 9am kick off vs Scunthorpe. During the game both sides started nervously and there was nothing to separate the sides. After a drab first half it was all square at half time, and there is little to report. The second half continued much as the first half finished, but 7 minutes into the second period it would be IMFC that would take the lead through a brilliant individual goal from Burnsy. It looked like the Millers would hold out for an undeserved victory, but a defensive mix up with 2 minutes to go allowed Scunny to equalize.

Final Score: Rotherham 1 – 1 Scunthorpe.

Friendly Game: Sports Interactive vs Rotherham

A friendly game was organised vs Sports Interactive in which a mixture of IMFC players and supporters were given a run out in a very enjoyable game. The Millers took an early lead through Chris. The game finished 2-1 to Sports Interactive after two second half goals though, as despite a few youthful players in the IMFC team, the average age of the squad was still around 60 given that we had old heads such as Malcom, Grist, Skip, and Daz playing ;-)

Crewe vs Rotherham

A 1pm kick off time against Crewe allowed the hangovers to recede and some good football to be played by the Millers. Unfortunately for Crewe a back lash came in reaction to our bad performance earlier that morning. A young Crewe side could not cope with the tempo which the game was played at, and the Millers raced into a 3-0 lead by half time with a first half hat-trick from Mr Burns. The onslaught continued and the final score was 5-0 after second half goals through JV and Symon.

Final Score: Crewe 0 – 5 Rotherham

Coventry vs Rotherham

With Coventry having won their first two group games against Scunthorpe and Crewe this meant that the Internet Millers needed to win this game if they were to top the group, which was important given the seeded draw for the Sunday fixtures. With this set in our minds we set out like a house on fire and played the game at a high tempo. Some early firm but fair challenges let Coventry know that they were up against it, and it wasn’t long before we raced into a 2-0 lead with two strikes for Burnsy. Coventry pulled a goal back before half time through an amazing strike, which could potentially lead to a tight second half. However, the Millers pulled through stronger than ever, and despite missing an early second half penalty, a goal from JV, and a goal from Burnsy which was worthy of goal of the tournament saw us run out 4 - 1 winners.

Final Score: Coventry 1 – 4 Rotherham
