Barnsley vs Internet Millers Review

Last updated : 26 July 2004 By Denti
The fine performance and result was what we were looking for to build confidence before this years Worldnet competition.

The squad was as follows:

Steve (Striker)
Duds (Def)
John (Mid)
Denti (Def)
Chris Grist (Striker)
Lee (Def)
Symon (Striker)
Skip (GK)
Mike (Mid)
Dave (Def)
Steve R (Mid)
Copey (Def)
Jammer (Mid)

Reviewing the squad it was decided that a 4-4-2 formation would be played as opposed to the more recently used 3-5-2. As well as this formation being better suited to the players available, it would also give us an opportunity to play together using this formation should we wish to use it at Worldnet.
The starting Lineup was:

Skip
Duds, Dave, Denti, Copey
Chris Grist, Steve R, Jammer, Mike
Steve, Symon

The first half saw us kick with the wind so it was important to get into a lead. From the off were were the better side, but were struggling to convert chances. As well as playing some encouraging football, the Jammer and Steve combination caused Barnsley problems with Steve regularly being threaded through. Steve did not bring his finishing boots though and chances were not converted.

Eventually something had to give, and it came on 25 minutes where Symon found himself through, and coolly finished passed the goalkeeper.

This drove IMFC into action and two more goals came before half time, the first from Symon, and the second from Steve.

On the half hour mark changes were made. Duds came off for Lee at right back, and Chris Grist came off to make way for John on the right wing.

Almost immediately Lee was in the middle of the action where he had a tussle with one of the oposotion. IMFC kept their head and the score remained the same until half time.

Half Time: Barnsley 0 - 3 IMFC

No changes were made at half time so the starting lineup for the second half would be:

Skip
Lee, Dave, Denti, Copey
John, Jammer, Steve R, Mike
Steve, Symon

The second half was a repeat performance of the first, and the Internet Millers scored soon after half time through Steve Richards' determination. After a poor backpass was made to the goalkeeper, Steve Richards charged the kick down and took it in the knackers but managed to keep going and poke home.

Barnsley caused little threat to the Millers defence with Skip having little to save. There were a few scares but in general the Millers defence tidied up well and the partnership between Skip and the back four was working well.

A moment of madness from myself saw me annoy Barnsley 3 times in 20 seconds. First I handballed instead of heading (no idea why - my head would not move to the ball), secondly I got in the way of the free kick, and thirdly kicked the ball away. Lets just say it must have been a rush of blood to the head! I apologise!

The Internet Millers rounded up the game with two more goals, the first coming from Symon, and the second from Stevie.

Some more changes were made on 75 minutes with Steve making way for Chris Grist, and Duds coming back on at full back for Copey, but IMFC finsihed strong and ran out 6-0 winners.

Full Time: Barnsley 0 - 6 Internet Millers

Match Summary

Barnsley were a new side and failed to create any major threat to us. However, it was a morale boosting victory and there were many positives to take from this game into Worldnet. Every player got a good run out and Symon finally had his breakthrough scoring an hat-trick. Mike gave the Internet Millers another option on the left hand side and constantly caused Barnsley problems and also acted as a regular outlet for Skip. The defence wasn't troubled , and we bossed midfield with Jammer creating many opportunities for the front two.
