The 20 Questions - Sunderland AFC

Last updated : 24 October 2004 By Bigrich.....
Who are you? where are you from and how long have you supported your club?
I’m Paul Riddell, from Newbottle, near Sunderland originally but now exiled in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire and as far as I can remember I’ve always supported the lads… it’s not a choice

What was your first game?
Sunderland v Blackpool about 87 think it was 2-2… to e honest the only thing I remember that Bobby Mimms was in goal and at the age of 10 I was a bit star struck!

Describe the most memorable and worst game you've seen and why?
Most memorable has to be the Play Off Semi Final second leg against your dear friends the Blades, the atmosphere was just electric, we raced into a 2 goal lead and then held our breath and bit our nails for what seemed like an eternity, everything was perfect, even the sea mist rolling in off the coast added to the occasion… happy days.

Worst game? Jesus that’s a hard one… probably the away defeat to the scum in our final premiership season… completely gutless performance

Who do you consider as your current local rivals, and why?
Newcastle, always have been and always will be…accept no imitations (Middlesbrough are you reading?)

Who are the best and worst players you have seen?
For us or oppo? I assume if you mean us then Kieron Brady had a talent like I have never seen before or since, but cos you’ve probably never heard of him then I guess someone like Niall Quinn who was different gravy.

Worst… Gareth Hall, no doubt

Johnny Mullin
Which current or former Rotherham player impressed you most?

Does John Mullin still play for you? Aye he does doesn’t he – Mullin then, big noses are back

How did you fare last season?
In my opinion, considering we had a side decimated by our financial plight I think we did okay, got to the Cup Semi which you can’t grumble about and but for a laughable refereeing decision, we’d have had a crack at going back up at Cardiff

How do you think you'll do this season?
I think we’ll go one better than last year, we have some key players still out and if we can hang around the top end until Piper is fit and Michael Bridges is match fit then we can go up

What's the local drink and snap?
I only drink Guinness so I don’t know about our ales, Vaux our brewery has scandalously shut down a few year back but a local brewery (Darwin’s I think) did produce a beer called Poominator after our Estonian legend scored that header at Pride Park. Ham and Pease Pudding stotties are amazing, I mean really, truly fan-bloody-tastic

If Sunderland were a TV personality, who would it be and why?
Oh Victor Meldrew without a shadow of a doubt... the amount of times I feel myself saying "Oh I do not bloody believe it" when I watch the lads, it just has to be

So what do you think of Rotherham?
I like Rotherham actually, purely cos I don’t like either Wednesday or United and definitely not Leeds

Is your manager barking mad?
Mick Mac is not mad, he looks like Bert or Ernie from Sesame Street though

Are you happy with your Chairman/Backroom staff?
Not really happy with them, but what is the alternative? Unless Roman Abramovich has an older brother called Boris with more money and seeing a lass from Pennywell then I think what we have is what we have

Which team do you want to beat the most this season and why?
Leeds – oh we’ve done them
Millwall – and them
Probably Stoke for some reason, fans are a bunch of knobs

What sort of line-up can we expect from you?
As the infamous Mike Bassett said
“Our line up will be Four four f**king two!”

Predicted score?
Oh do I have to, I hate predictions

Who's going up?
Wigan, West Ham and hopefully us

Who's going down?
I would be chuffed if the Scabs from Forest went down, and if they take Cardiff and Gillingham with them then it would be good… don’t want you lot down and I’m not just saying that
