20Questions - Sunderland AFC

Last updated : 21 February 2005 By Bigrich.....
Who are you; where are you from and how long have you supported your club?

Dave Palmer, from Sunderland and supported the Lads since the 1973 Cup Final - but haway lads. I was too young to drive a bandwagon then! I was only 8.

What was your first game?
Sometime during the early part of the 74/75 season but Gods knows who against. I remember a midweek home defeat against Fulham around about that time and that was pretty depressing!

Describe the most memorable and worst game you've seen and why?
In the flesh rather than TV I would say the promotion clincher against West Ham in 1979 was the most memorable. They had just won the FA cup and we beat them 2-0 in front of 47000 at Roker Park with about 10000 locked outside the ground. It was bedlam just getting to the ground let alone getting in. The atmostphere was electic. The whole balmy night was a fantastic occasion. Roker Park at its glorious best!

Worst - pick anyone of several from our record breaking 19 point relegation season in the Premiership. I have never seen so many well paid so-called star players so devoid of any passion for our shirt, our Club and most importantly, our fans. They know who they are. May they hang their heads in shame.

If Sunderland was a Celebrity, who would it be and why?
Stan Laurel - Popular, well loved, but you know there's a f*ck-up just around the corner!

Who do you consider as your current local rivals, and why?
Newcastle United (spit). Why? They are the most arrogant fans on Gods earth and think they owed success simply for turning up in large numbers. Well happy anniversary Scummers. 50 years since you last won a domestic trophy. Cheers and here's to the next 50 years!

Who are the best and worst players you have seen?
Marco Gabbiadini became a hero out of nothing just when we needed one most and were in the old 3rd Div. No disrespect to Kevin Phillips, but we were heading to oblivion before Marco arrived.

Worst player - so many to choose from but I'll use Shaun Cunnington as an example off the top of my head. He probably wasn't the worst, but we've had so many ordinary footballers over the years that's been our trouble. We've been a haven for "ordinary footballers".

Johnny M
Which current or former Rotherham player impressed you most?
Junior was a handful when we played you at your place and he's the only one who really stood out to be honest. John Mullen and Michael Proctor deserve honourable mentions for their services through!

How did you fare last season?
Defeat in two Semi-Finals, the play-offs and the FA Cup. A season of might have beens? Perhaps, but if our current regime hadn't turned things round we could easily have been another Sheff Wed in the making. And we know what The Millers think of Sheff Wed!

After beating us with a controversial goal at Millmoor hows things gone on since?
Won 11, drawn 1, lost 5. Steadily climbed the table but we just cannot break into that top two. We've shown great "bouncebackability" from defeats though so Rotherham beware the backlash!

Can you make Automatic promotion?
Most definitely. I think if we do get into the top two soon the confidence will be infectcious and we'll be unstoppable. I hope.

Proc in Sunderland colours
Michael Procter, after a great start with us has gone off the boil, how was he for you?.
Michael was always well liked as he is a local lad. I'd have loved to have seen him make the grade for us but perhaps he just lacks that little bit extra class that makes the top players stand out from the 100%ers?

So what do you think of The Millers?
I like clubs like Rotherham. You're nearly a local Derby for us if we ain't in the top flight! Its looking pretty ominous for you but if you could get the points you need to stay up after your visit to the SOL I'm sure you'll be doing us a favour as well.

Is your manager barking mad?
Completely! He thinks Jeff Whitley is a footballer!

Are you happy with your Chairman/Backroom staff?
Our Chairman, Bob Murray, has made so many mistakes, not least of all giving Peter Reid so much autonomy in transfer dealings the little monkey headed Scouse ****er nearly bankrupt our club.I don't suppose there's any Russian billionaires kicking their heels in the back streets of Rotherham that want to take over a sleeping giant is there?

Mick McCarthy, Ian Evans and the rest of the Backroom staff have worked minor miracles not only getting the team where they are today but saving us a fortune in the transfer market with some very astute signings.

Which team do you want to beat the most this season and why?
Apart from the top two (Ipswich and Wigan of course) it has to be West Ham. The London media give them so much publicity it boils my piss.

What sort of line-up can we expect from you?
Solid and unspectacular. Its been the trademark of our season. Same team that started against Brighton I guess though I would rather start with Sean Thornton in centre midfield instead of Jeff Whitley.

Lets hope for some of this
Predicted score?

3-1, a late Michael Proctor goal for the Millers in front of his family and friends - he deserves it.

Who's going up?
Ipswich and Sunderland.

Who's going down?
Sorry but I think Rotherham are running out of games so you'll probably go down I'm afraid along with Gillingam. And I think Plymouth will join you. They're in freefall at the wrong time of the season.

Pie's - What Flavour?
The 'Meat & Potato Lucky Pie' at the SOL is alright but you cannot beat the Cornish Pasties!
