We lacked cutting edge - Ronnie

Last updated : 01 November 2009 By Bigrich.....
"A point was probably the fair result, They're not a bad side, they're a nice footballing side, but we just lacked the cutting edge today." Ronnie told Radio Sheffield after the game.

"We were just waiting for somebody to light the blue touchpaper to get going, but there was no spark there and thats the difficult thing with us because for the last fifteen minutes we upped the tempo and used the multiball system the way you should use it and got some crosses into the box."

"To be fair we've not had many chances and they've not either, but we're the home team, I've asked the strikers how many shots and headers have we had, and we're at home and we havn't had them. They've not had a shot between them and its not just down to them, its down to the team to react and play the right balls at the right times."

Ronnie spoke about the teams formation; "We didnt stay 4-3-3 for long thats for sure cos we went 4-4-2 just before half time and played 4-4-2 in the second half. The feeling was to get Warney in behind their number 8 who was the playmaker for them, but the problem we had was their left back was coming very deep and we needed our right back to go and nail him. Unfortunately that did'nt happen and thats why they had a lot of space down the left hand side in the first half. So we changed it with 10 minutes to go and lets be fair in the second half we've gone back to 4-4-2 which they're used to."

Ronnie went on to speak about his strikers Tom Pope and Alfie; "They have'nt seen much of the ball but the service has to be better, we have a tendancy to launch one or two balls , we've tried to pass it and do it in the right way but we go route one too quickly and that doesn't suit Popey and Alfie and we've got to start playing little balls in where Alf can turn and get at people and when we've got in behind them get the ball past the first man and get the ball in the box to get some headers in."

"Tom Pope's certainly lacking in confidence, theres no doubt about that but he'll come through that. He's a big lad, I've seen him play at Crewe at the next level up and he was outstanding, he scored goals at West Brom this season. He's just lacking some confidence at the moment but we'll work with him in training and get him to the player we know he can be."

"The teams mood is alright, theyre just down that we can't seem to get the win thats all, we've been in a lot of games where we've got a draw or defeat when we should have won them. Like today we've had the best chance of the game with the header. Nicho's headed it down like we tell every good striker to do, nod it down. He heads it straight away and the keeper makes a save from it."

"Overall it was'nt the best performance - we know that but we're just lacking that spark, I'm lost for words, its like the touchpaper we're waiting for somebody to make it happen but we can't for me and Jimmy to make it, they've got to make it happen themselves when they're out there."

"Micky Cummins will be out for 4-6 weeks with the tear that he's got in there, so thats him done with that. it's a blow because he's had an opportunity to come in and he gives us something different. He's an attacking midfielder player who loves to get in the box."

"I think we just need a little bit of life now, we need a spark, a bit of pace, we're lacking that little bit of pace and energy in the right areas and thats something we've got to put right." Ronnie added.

Moore was missing midfielder Nicky Law through illness, a player who was missed today Ronnie said; "You look at the quality he gives you, he had flu Monday and Tuesday, looked like he was going to be alright Wednesday, then picked up tonsilitis Thursday and he's struggling."

"He's a big miss for us, there's no doubt about that but the lads that went out there are all fighting for thier places and they know that, but we just need to make sure that when we're playing here at home that we up the tempo and play at a tempo and keep that tempo there. Other sides should be on the back foot and not finding it easy to find a pass."

Ronnie had been looking to bring in players last week without any joy, and its not looking great for this week either with it being FA Cup week.

"The problem is that it's FA Cup week and your very lucky if you get somebody allowed to play in the cup thats the problem. But that doesnt mean that you can't get a long way advance in talks with the player and then sort it out after that."
