Gillingham 3 - 1 Millers: Ronnie's Reaction

Last updated : 19 December 2004 By Denti

“It was bitterly disappointing, not just when you consider the importance of this game to the player but to the club itself. The performance we gave just wasn’t good enough and that’s why we’re in the position we are.”

“I don’t think it was a magnificent game, I don’t think
Gillingham were brilliant, it was a dour battle and until the first goal went in it change the game. We had a good chance at 0-0 with Junior, I don’t know how he missed it from where he was, but we’ve missed other chances in the game.”

“We got caught at 2-1, we pushed a lot of men forward and the own goal sums up the game really.”

Referring to the first goal Ronnie commented: “It was frustrating for everyone really because we thought we’d done everything right without being brilliant. I think Polly knows he should have caught it, but when he’s punched it and its come back in the lad should have been offside.”

“It wasn’t pretty and it wasn’t good, we didn’t have a thousand supporters here but they’ve come all the way down here to support us and they deserve better than what they got”.

Campbell-Ryce aside, Ronnie was asked to comments on the poor performances from other players on the day. “I thought the front two were powder puff, were never at the races and couldn’t get hold of it and kept giving it away which put us on the back foot in the first half. I had a go at them about it at half time, and that’s why I’ve brought Will on. Will’s come on and run about and shown you can still enjoy a game”.

“We weren’t strong in midfield and I thought the back three had their hands full with Darren Byfield all afternoon. It wasn’t good and if we could have pulled off any sort of performance like against Sheffield United then it would have certainly been a game we could have won.”

Ed: Perhaps if the tactics had have been similar to those against
Sheffield United then maybe we would have pulled off a similar performance!

When asked about Hoskins Ronnie commented: “He’s took the goal every so well. He’s looking more like himself now, he’s looking like a player, and there’s no reason why I can’t play him against
Leicester, at least he’s got a bit of enthusiasm.”

Ronnie was then asked about the current squad and how he had let two go, but the goalposts moved to not allow anyone to come in. Ronnie vented his frustration and suggested a small squad would be struggling over Christmas if any knocks are picked up after the injury to McLaren.

“We need to bring players in, but the way the finances are at the club at the minute its not going to happen.”
