You hadn't seen the best of me - Tonge

Former Barnsley man Tonge, who is enjoying the form of his life after the unfortunate injury to Mark Lynch, admits to the Advertiser that he's had to take his opportunity with both hands after worknig hard pre-season.

"I thought I was playing well in pre-season but then I got a little injury and Lynchy got in and did really well. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed and frustrated but it's how you react to being dropped or left out that counts. "Luckily I got in and I hope I'm staking a claim."

Tonge's reward for his current form yielded the opening goal in last week's win at Macclesfield, and he continued: "To be honest, a few months ago I probably would have squared that ball to Drewe Broughton but I'm playing with a bit of confidence at the moment and I had a good first touch and just had a pop.

"It was nice to see it go in. I've never scored a goal in senior football before and it was great to get that monkey off my back. I've had a bit of stick from the lads about my celebration but I didn't really know what to do. It was all a bit of a blur.

"I like getting forward. That's a part of my game and with the system we're playing you get to push on a bit more. Hopefully there's more goals to come from me."
