The midfielder has had a shoulder operation which has been well documented, but the 24 year-old hopes he can return to play some part in Saturday's friendly against Gretna at Millmoor.

He said: “I don't think I will take part in the game tomorrow but hopefully if all goes well I should be able to play at some stage n Saturday.

“In training I am now starting to get involved in contact so unless there is any problem I should be ok.”

Lee has had a torrid run of injuries but still won the MillersMAD player of the season award in May: “First of all I had to have the operation on my nose after breaking it against Nottingham Forest and then I had some tissue repaired in my shoulder due to wear and tear.

“In the close season I had to do my exercises on a bike but now I'm not far away from the same fitness as the rest of the lads.”

Williamson has been linked with a move away from Rotherham, with Barnsley denying reports of a concrete bid. Meanwhile Williamson insists he is concentrating on the job in hand: “I am just concentrating here on playing at Rotherham United and anything else that happens I will leave in the club's hands. I think we'll do well this season and soon wipe off that ten point defecit.”

Tonight sees Sunderland visit Millmoor with trialist Alexis Nicolas expected to play some part as Alan Knill takes a look at the 23 year-old ex Chelsea and Brighton midfield man. Kick off is 7.45pm and fans are reminded they can pay on the gate for £10 and £5 concessions.
