We've let you down - Fenners

Fenton told the Advertiser: “The decline has been unbelievable. If you look at the form table for the second half of the season we would probably be in the bottom two. It’s our fault, of course it is, but we haven’t been that bad. The ball hasn’t fallen for us and things have gone against us but at the end of the day it’s up to us to put that right and we haven’t and it’s disappointing."

“We were flying at one point. We beat Port Vale 5-0 at Don Valley on New Year’s Day and then went to Macclesfield on the Monday and won 2-0. Then something happened and I don’t know what, because nothing changed. We were doing the same things but results started going backwards.” Fenton added:

“We have massively underachieved. When you look at the sides that are going to go up this year, we have as good if not better squad than the majority of teams in this league and we should be at the very least in the play-offs and it’s very disappointing we’re not."

“Everyone knows we have probably one of the highest budgets in this league and we have a squad to show for that, but we haven’t performed well enough. We should be in the play-offs but we’re not, so the players have let the club down.”

Fenton however insists that the Millers have had lady luck against them; “We’ve had no luck at all in the last ten or 15 games in front of goal, Gillingham hardly hurt us but then a shot hit Cressy and bounced over Jamie and we lost and that’s our chance of the playoffs gone."

“It’s another season in League Two, which is disappointing, but I’m sure there will be another push next year. The fans are going to be upset, and I can understand that, but there’s no point looking back. The gaffer has a lot of players out of contract and he is going to have to sort out what he wants to do and build a side for next year.”

Fenton is one of 11 players out of contract with the Millers, and hopes he will be offered a deal by Andy Scott; “I’ve made my intentions clear. I want to stay on and play for this manager, but whether the club want to keep me, I don’t know. They’ve not been on to me yet."

“I’m feeling good and if the club want to keep me I’d be glad to stay but you never know what they are thinking.” he added.
