We need to show our character - O'Connor

O'Connor has been in sparkling form despite two recent home defeats and is set to play alongside David Noble at Burton tomorrow after recovering from a slight groin strain.

And the Irishman rebuffed claims that manager Steve Evans has lost the dressing room during the recent slump in home form.

“I've had a few people say, he's lost the dressing room, but that's not true,” O'Connor told the Advertiser.

“It's all rumours. One person starts it and then it gets around. We had a clear-the-air meeting last Sunday and worked hard in training all week and it showed on Saturday that if we're on top form no-one will beat us. We are still all together as one.

“I know someone threw a scarf at the manager in the previous game and it's not nice to see. It's the players' fault. The manager picks the 11 and it's up to the 11 to go out and perform and we didn't do that for a few weeks but we worked on a few things in training and Saturday showed it had worked.

“It's just the way it is. One week the manager is the best and the next he's on his way out, but we'll stick together.

“We just need to take it game by game, pick up some wins during this spell and see where we go. Last Saturday was important for us. We needed the win just to stay near the automatic promotion places. We'd worked hard on set plays and how to play against Northampton and I thought from the first minute to the end we were the better team.

“We also needed to show some character, especially for the fans because they pay their hard-earned money to come and watch. We'd been horrendous the previous two or three weeks so to come out and get a convincing 3-1 win was great.

"Me and David Noble like to get on the ball but we're doing the ugly side of the game at the minute. The gaffer has told us to win the second balls and then get it down and play and I thought on Saturday we did well.

“It's strange. Last Saturday morning we were ninth but if we win at Burton this weekend we could go third with games in hand, so they're big matches.”
