Warne - Hugely disappointed

“I think the fans and the players and staff turned up with high expectations that we would come away with some points, We’ve spent the week explaining to the lads how they play. They’ve got strengths with the way they play, they’ve had some great results. They’ve beaten Charlton and Peterborough, so they’re no mugs. They narrowly lost to Northampton last week. We knew what to expect."

“I asked the lads to start the game really well and fast, regrettably we concede the goal early as we did; an individual error with someone not picking his man up, which is a worry. It took a long time for the team to get going and it affected them. There wasn’t enough positivity on the ball today and we didn’t have the spark we’ve had this season. So, my emotion is of huge disappointment.”

“What I can think is that a few of the lads were under par but I could name eight or nine of them, hopefully that’s just one game. We’ve had quite a big debrief today and told some home truths."

“I’m disappointed because we could have gone into the FA Cup week to potentially put ourselves into third. We didn’t pick up any points so it’s disappointing."

“We’ll have to reshuffle the pack, freshen it up and get back to the way we played. I’m not expecting to turn up and win every home game. Teams will come here knowing what they’re up against. Credit to Gillingham, I thought they played really well. I felt they frustrated us and our wingers couldn’t have an impact on the game.”

“I don’t know how many attempts on goal they had, maybe four, Kieffer’s finish was good. He got his goal but we didn’t have enough after that. We had a few corners. Maybe on another day we get one and go on to win it. Then there’s the sending off and we conceded one from a corner. Three-one maybe flattered them but they played well."

Warne then spoke about Mattocks red card, his second of the season; “I haven’t watched it back yet, I will watch it back. Joe’s obviously reacted badly. He’s played 300-odd league games so I expect more from him. He’s apologised to the group which is little consolation as I stand here now."

“They came here and did a job on us. Today we weren’t good enough to take anything out of the game.”

“I’ll set out to win all the games, obviously, but I’ll freshen up the pack if it seems right. The lads will have to fight for their jerseys and we’ll put out the best team to take on Crewe.

“We’ll put it out to the lads this week and we’ll assemble a team to go on an FA Cup run.”
