Training ground lease granted

MillersMAD reported several weeks ago about a potential opportunity explored by the club on the land between Roughwood Juniors and Wingfield Comprehensive Schools.

Today the initial lease was approved for the club, who are still in detailed talks with RMBC, about possible sites for both their new ground and also the training facilities and centre of excellence after being housed at Donny's Keepmoat Stadium since their moves from Millmoor and Hooton Lodge.

Chief Operating Officer Paul Douglas told the club's official website: "From the outset this was on the understanding that whilst its primary purpose would be to train and develop new young talent for Rotherham United, as well as the first team, it would serve to benefit the community in which it was based as well as the wider community of Rotherham as a whole.

"We as a club are fully committed to this principle.

"On this basis we have in principle been granted a lease on a piece of land on Roughwood Road and will now work on obtaining the necessary planning permission, which will in turn require that we consult with the people in the area, to enable this development to happen.

"It is vital for the future of the football club that we have a training base and academy of our own, here in Rotherham.

"This together with our own new stadium will provide the people of Rotherham access to facilities comparable to our neighbours in Sheffield, Barnsley and Doncaster."
