The Season That Was 04-05 – Deano's December Review
Last updated : 30 June 2005 By Bigrich.....
The month began with rumours that French midfielder and ex Arsenal star Emanuel Petit was interesting Ronnie Moore. At 35, Petit was said to be willing to move to South Yorkshire in the hope of regular first team action.
Amidst such speculative rumours, a trip to Brighton brought a 1-0 defeat, as Dan Harding punished Robbie Stockdale’s slack defending by firing in on his left foot with just 8 minutes left, breaking Millers hearts.
A week later, Sheffield United arrived at Millmoor for a South Yorkshire derby. The Millers would have to do without John Mullin, who, it was announced, was sidelined for 2 months through injury. A display of fight and skilful play in flashes made for an entertaining game, as the lads battled back from two goals down to secure a point, McIntosh’s bullet header levelling things up in the second period after the Blades had initially taken a two goal lead.
The day before the Gillingham trip the following Saturday, rumours of an Alan Lee return reared their head for the first time, with the Irishman struggling to make a major impact in South Wales. Neil Freeman announced yet another bid for the club, as the team suffered a new low in a 3-1 reverse in Kent.
The game will be remembered for the ‘Vernazza special’ for a few seasons to come, a cracking own-goal on the volley from 30 yards leaving Pollitt stranded! Will Hoskins grabbed our only reply with a cheeky lob late on.
Boxing day saw 700 plus Millers make the trip to the Walkers Stadium, Leicester, as the lads looked for a long awaited away victory. The fans weren’t to be disappointed, as Shaun Barker grabbed the only goal of the game, scoring in a crowded penalty box as the ball bobbled around and City failed to clear.

A nice Christmas present to add to the news that RUST had completed their buyout of the club and everything was officially signed and sealed.
The month ended in controversy, as West Ham rolled into town. Having gone two goals up, Mr Sheringham entered the fray as two penalties cost the Millers three precious points and back to back league wins.
The first controversial penalty came as Poliitt was adjudged to have brought down Harewood, and Sheringham converted with aplom. The second tackle outside the box saw our friend Teddy rithing in agony as his momentum took him across the 18 yard line…the referee kindly awarded a spotkick which levelled the scores at 2-2 and left the majority of Millmoor fuming. At least you had the decency to use the changing rooms lads…..
And so the New Year beckoned, Paul Warne extended his loan at Mansfield as we all reflected on 2004 as a whole and a miserable first half of the season…..here’s to 2005 boys! Cheers!….
