Shearer explains Chessie mistake

The stopper fell on the saturated grass to gift Chessie an early goal in last weeks 1-1 draw, and he spoke to the 'Tiser to explain his thoughts.

He says: “I put my left foot down and it just went from beneath me. It looked a bit daft. At the time you know straight away you've cost your team a goal so you don't feel the best. It would have been easy for the supporters to get on my back and start moaning at me but they chanted my name and gave me that bit of extra confidence.

“It's not that type of fan base to get on players' backs and I have to thank them massively. They pay their money and are entitled to give their own opinion but they got right behind me and it meant a lot to me and helped me get through the game.

“I'm just gutted we weren't able to give them three points: As a goalkeeper you do make mistakes and when you make them they are usually costly. It has happened to me before and you just have to stay professional. It was early enough in the game and we had a lot of time to get something back from it.

“I made a save about five minutes after the error down to my right-hand side and that gave me a bit of confidence and I thought we went on and showed what a good team we are. We started dominating and their keeper made a few world class saves and against a team who are going to be pushing to get back to League One, I think we can take a lot of positives.”
