The 22 year-old had previously been on trial at Brighton, before Russell Slade's sacking gave Ronnie Moore an opportunity to have a look at the former Yeovil and Crewe man.
Roberts is expected to sign a contract until the end of the season with an option to extend it by a further year if both parties reach an agreement next summer.
