Newsham ready for first team berth

After being around the squad for a couple of years without ever making his mark, Newsham brought himself to the attention of manager and fans with three goals late last season.

"I've been around the first team for two years now and I'm 20 years old - I need to be pushing on," Newsham told the Rotherham Advertiser.

"I'm a smaller nippy player while lads like Chris O'Grady, Derek Holmes and Ryan Taylor are big and I'm looking forward to working off of them. I'm trying to get combination play going and hopefully it will come off during the season.

"There are quite a few new players around but we went to the health spa this summer and that was good for team banter and team morale and I think it started to come through naturally.

The young striker is hoping that the Millers can make a good start and is aware of the pitfalls of being so slight. "The gaffer has told us it's not a league for pretty football, so we've got to get in there and. Work on the second balls," he says.

"But we've worked on that in training and I'm looking forward to getting going. "I'd like to think we can bounce straight back."
