The 27 year-old, from Aston, was snapped up from Bury after turning down a new deal at Gigg Lane at the beginning of the week.

And he told the Star about the Millers interest. "Rotherham came in and showed strong interest and it went from there," he said.

"Ronnie Moore said he had known about me for some time and that he was interested and that left-back was a position they were looking to bring in another body. Rotherham did well last season and I'm born and bred in Sheffield so I thought it would be a good move.

"I know the area well and I'm excited by the plans the club have got for the future. The new stadium is coming too so everything seems to be heading in the right direction.

"I thought when we played against Rotherham last year that they looked a strong side and I just saw a bit more potential at the club. I'm ready to get started now."

Newy continued: "It is always exciting when you sign for a new club and I can't wait for pre-season to come around. There is a good group of players here and obviously Ronnie has been there and done it on the management side so I don't think we will be too far off promotion.

"We've got a strong squad and plenty of people who can score goals so I'm optimistic."
