A statement on the clubs official website reads:

Rotherham United are among six clubs to have been awarded 'The Football League Family Excellence Award' for the first time.

Created in 2007, the Award is based on an independent assessment, commissioned by The Football League, of the family experience at all 72 League clubs during the 2010/11 season using 'mystery shopper' families and recognises the outstanding experience clubs provide for young fans and families at their grounds.

A record 47 clubs from across all three divisions of The Football League were given the Award for 2011 - topping the previous highest total of 41 - with 13 clubs securing it for the fourth year running.

On hearing the news Chairman Tony Stewart heralded the news as a big step forward for the club:"Behind the scenes we have professional people who are doing a huge amount of hard work and it is encouraging to see that this work has been recognised by the Football League. As we move closer to moving back into Rotherham and into our new stadium it is vitally important we can attract families to watch Rotherham United. We have introduced a number of initiatives and projects which have been specifically targeted at encouraging families to be more involved with the club, and that will continue as we look to build one of the finest community stadium's in the country."

Chief Operating Officer Paul Douglas added:"A number of factors were taken into consideration by the judging panel before the club was awarded this prestigious honour. The clubs 'Bright Sparks' initiative designed at supporting schools and students in a variety of educational activities, the club support to the Football League 'Enjoy the Match' campaign and the family interaction with our Stadium Announcer Richard Lee and mascot Miller Bear at our home games were one of many examples of why the club were given the award."

The Football League will again recognise the clubs delivering the very best family experience in each division through the 'Family Club of the Year' award at this season's 2011 Football League Awards, held on the 20th of March in London. The Millers were yesterday nominated for the 'Best Matchday Programme' category.
