Evans had expected to announce a deal today for a young wide player, with former Yeovil man Kieran Agard and Shrewsbury's released Lionel Ainsworth just two of the rumoured targets.
But a potential deal has now broken down at this stage, along with talks to capture the signature of a central midfield player that could be resurrected.
The news comes after the club were also reportedly close to sealing the signing of Michael O'Connor from Scunthorpe.
