Improvement already visible for Holmes

Since signing in the summer big target man Derek Holmes is the key man the fans wanted to lead the attack, and the ex Carlisle and Bournemouth forward man can't speak highly enough of manager Mark Robins - whom he insists is the key behind his already improved game since he joined over the summer.

"He's really helped me," Holmes commented speaking to the Advertiser. "He's a good manager and he was a striker himself who played at a good level. In the short time I've been here he's made me a better player.

"He's taken me aside and said one or two bits and pieces which I think have improved my game."

Gaining promotion with Carlisle with several different strike partners, Holmes reflects on life pre Riotherham United: "Myself and Karl Hawley played up front in the Conference and then with Michael Bridges in League Two. We got success in both seasons but it was really difficult personally. I was known as the donkey work man whereas Karl and Bridgey always got the goals, but it worked and I don't mind that. I'm always the one who goes up for the headers and takes the knocks.

"I had no qualms with dropping down a division, I've been here before and I know what it's all about.

"We're more than capable of holding our own in this division but we need to start well. That gives you the confidence. Having played in this league before, I know that anyone can beat anyone on any given Saturday. It's just all about hanging in and being strong.

"The spirit here is fantastic and there's already a great bond. There's 11 new players and we're all in the same boat and everyone has just fitted in."
