I'd love to play on - Warney

warne1Fans favorite Paul Warne is hoping to be pulling on his boots again next season, and feels he's still fit enough to play at this level.

Speaking to the Advertiser, Warney said he would be happy to carry on his other role of a training organiser but only if he had the chance to play as well; "My situation this summer is the same as I've had for the last five summers. I'd love to play on but whether I can or not is a different matter. I'm not as fit as some of the other lads, they are absolute machines but I felt great in pre-season and was enjoying my football until I broke my leg."

"I wouldn't say I'm match fit yet but if I was to get fit then I think I'm good enough to play at this level. It was only 12 months ago that I got Player of the Year at Yeovil, so I don't think I'm finished by any stretch. I'm just a stubborn old b*****."

"I would like to stay here as a player and if there was more responsibility I would take it on board because I understand that at my age, wherever I was to go, I wouldn't be the first name on the team sheet, although I think I should be!"

"If it meant I started ten games and came on in ten and was doing something behind the scenes for the lads then I would take that. Nothing has been spoken about yet and I will see where we are in the summer but I'd like to stay because I love the club. The fact that the first two months of this season were the most I've enjoyed football in years and then to have that taken off me with a broken leg, it just doesn't feel right personally to finish my career like that, If I score the winner (in the play-off final) at Wembley in a month's time then I might consider it, but as it is at the moment I want to play."

Warney returned from a 5 month lay off in last Saturdays win at Barnet; "That was nice but I was blowing out of my bum at the end, I was only on a few minutes but it felt like 90! It was nice to be back as it's taken a long time. In January and February I was really depressed because the leg wasn't getting any better. It just never repaired, it took forever."

"I'm not stupid. Everyone probably thought, 'he's old, he's had enough and he's hung up his boots,' but that wasn't the case. I was training my backside off. I was swimming like Duncan Goodhew, in fact I looked like him. Then last week I asked to play for the reserves. I can't say I was very good but I was enthusiastic and I ran around as usual. The gaffer came and watched and I thought if I was fit he might give me run at Barnet and he did."

"I had no pain in my leg. In fact I've had no pain in my leg for three weeks and that's given me a right boost."

Paul then gave his thoughts on the Barnet win; "Whatever level you're at, it's not cut and dried at 1- 0, It only needs one attempt on goal and it can be level. The thing is with us, we never seem to go two or three of up. It seems like it's been nervy for us for ages. Nevertheless, we'd lost four on the trot away from home and to go to Barnet and win was good, and don't forget it was to a team that had not lost to a top seven side at home all season."

"It does matter about performances but we just need to get points. If we can get a few wins back to back then hopefully we'll be formidable if we get in the play-offs."
