Speaking to BBC Radio Sheffield, Darren Garner explained why he reacted the way he did to the Millers fans that booed him off.

It's alleged that once again he gave the v sign to the fans that pay his wages, and many incensed fans rang up the local radio phone-ins to complain.

"I dont look at my self at being any better than the next man, but when i got to work which is playing football, I get hammered and sometimes I get praised, sometimes I should be able to take hammering along with the praise."

"I don't go into the supermarket and dont get served correctly I dont hammer them, but I know that's what I've got to put up with because I'm a footballer, but my philosophy in life is that I'm no better than the next man and when I go to work and people say I'm not very good at my job, it hurts and that is how I react."

"I wear my heart on my sleeve, if people dont like me than thats fine, I'll put up with that, when I've finished playing theyre not going to worry about what I'm doing and I'm not going to worry about them! "

"I can only apologise for reacting the way I did, if someone can take my arms down to my side if I get subbed again, but I know i cant react like that."

"I really hope that wont be my last game for Rotherham, I dont think it will be and I really hope it wont finish like that. I hope people can see the funny side of it, as I went off I waved as to say bye-bye, I don't care what you saying to me, you can boo me, jeer me whatever."

"He then pleaded to the Rotherham faithful "People please dont read too much into it, its tongue in cheek! Basically, its me just voicing my opinion through my hand signals! I know it's not right, but I have had people say to me if they were in my shoes they would do the same. There are people out there that react like that, everybodys not perfect, and I'm just the same, I'm far from being perfect."

"I had a bad game and got brought off which I expected, and I know its for the team, I am a team player, I love being at this club, the lads are like a family I've been here that long, and the thought of not being there, which will happen some day is not a nice thought."
