Former Millers boss Bergara dies

The Uruguayan who managed the Millers in 1999-97 had been ill recently and died peacefully in a nursing home at around 9.30am.

Bergara played for Uruguay U21's before moving to Europe where he played for Sevilla and Real Mallorca. He moved to England and had a largely successful era at Stockport County as manager where he led them up toWembley three times in four years.

He was appointed manager at Rotherham in 1996 to replace Archie Gemmill and John McGovern but could not halt a horrific slide that saw the club relegated to Division Three in May 1997. He left that summer for a spell at Doncaster.

He had recently been scouting for Sunderland and was known for his wacky approach to life. In an interview in 2006 he spoke of how he believed he had paved the way for the current set of foreigners with managerial roles in England after he was the first foreign manager in the English game. "It's possible that in a little way I helped open the way for the likes of Mourinho and Eriksson."

Everyone at MillersMAD passes on their deepest sympathy to Danny's family.

There will be a one minutes silence in respect of Danny before Tuesday nights game against Sheffield United.
