Don Valley has helped us - Stewart

Don Valley Stadium has done more for Rotherham United than it has been given credit for, says chairman Stewart.

The Millers are awaiting news from the council over the proposed land for the new stadium next week and Stewart told the Tiser the facilities are better than people give them credit for.

"From a playing point of view we have done quite well at Don Valley in the two seasons there", he said.

"We would have finished fifth in League Two in our first season but for a 17-point deduction and then last year we got to the play-off final. A lot has been said about the distance of the fans from the pitch, but there's room to look after families, the pitch looks good these days and there's proper changing rooms for the players, which there wasn't in the latter days at Millmoor.

"The hospitality areas is good," he added "There are three dining areas for hot meals and the pie and peas days of Millmoor are gone. And don't forget Don Valley also helped us attract a conscientious and dynamic commercial director in Steve Coakley. He came from Sheffield Wednesday to work with us and he's taken up the cudgels and done a really good job."

Stewart added: "We came out of obscurity and we needed somewhere to go. "The question is, can Don Valley Stadium get us to where we need to be? The answer to that is clearly yes."
