"We are waiting for the result of Lionels scan which is imminent, said boss Steve Evans speaking to the Press Association.
"If it is old damage it will need an operation but if it is new damage there won't be. The timescales will be roughly the same whatever happens."
Evans then confirmed the news about full back Tonge, who has already had treatment from a specialist after his early injury in last Saturdays win over Plymouth.
"Tonge will be out for 10-12 weeks, he has damaged medial ligaments in his knee but the bigger one is his ankle," added Evans.
"He had that manipulated back in earlier in the week. It looked a bad one when he did it. It's a shame because he was playing well."
