Millersmad Greatest XI: The full backs
Article by Millersmad Staff Monday, 21st May 2007
The team is really taking shape now with the completion of the back four. Find out who you voted as Rotherham's greatest ever full backs.

With just five candidates this was always going to be a tight one and there is a surprise choice who slots in to the full back roles.

Firstly though, at right back, a very popular Gerry Forrest takes his place in the side with an almost landslide victory.

A cultured right back who's comfort on the ball and attacking prowess were his stand out assets yet his great defensive abilities seemed to be forgotten. He played at Millmoor in the early 80's glory days and some quality showings got him a move to Southampton when some had thought his chance to play at the top level had passed him by.

He returned to Millmoor after a six year absence and once again commanded an instant place on the right hand side. He left a Rotherham legend.

Left back is a real shock, as many expected recently appointed assistant manager John Breckin to get the berth. Breckin, who played at the same time as Forrest, lost out to Millers stalwart, Paul Hurst in the race for the shirt.

Hurst, who came through the ranks at Millmoor is a one club man and is still at Rotherham approaching the record appearance level. A diminutive yet wholehearted and committed player, Hurst made the left back spot his own for nearly a decade. He was in the team that famously won at Wembley and was also in the double winning promotion team at the turn of the century.

He has mass ranks of fans who are willing to overlook any technical misgivings due to his committed nature and fighting ability but nevertheless, this selection will surprise many.
