Right Sided Midfielder

With just two candidates, this position was some what of a foregone conclusion with Tony Towner winning his place on the right hand side of midfield. Towner, affectionately known as 'Tiger' was a favourite for many fans during the epic early 80's team.

Tiger

A tricky winger, Towner was able to beat players for fun and he often did before getting to the byline and whipping in crosses that made many goals. Signed from Millwall, Towner also had an eye for goal but he will be most remembered for the buzz and anticipation that the fans got when the ball arrived at his feet and that's why he has been voted in.

Central Midfielders

Fan's favourite Gerry Gow has made central midfield after his hard tackling and determinded displays in the mid eighties. Signed from Manchester City in 1982 for £75,000 Gow became an important part of the team and his style of play was epitomised in just his second game for the club when he received a red card for a 'spicy' tackle. As well as being a hard man he was also calm on the ball and could score a goal or tow.

Gow also played for Yeovil and went on to manage the Glovers and also local neighbours Weymouth. He is now in the engineering trade.

A controversial selection has been chosen to play along side Gow in the centre and we hope that it does not put a mockery on this feature. After two polls, Lee Williamson has been voted in at central midfield, surely a refelection of the demographics of the voters rather than true opinion?

Williamson was signed in 2005 by Mick Harford following the club's relegation from the Championship and immediately made his mark with his driving midfield performances and box to box energy. He almost singled handedly kept Rotherham up that year and it was no coincidence that following his absence with injury, the season after, the club's results took a downturn.

Fortunate?

After signing on a free, Williamson was sold 16 months later for a fee believed to be about 500k, where he joined Watford in a joint deal that also saw Will Hoskins move south.

Left Sided Midfielder

Alan Crawford is the second player to earn his place at a canter as he polled almost half of the votes.

Playing on the left hand side during the 1970's, Crawford came through the youth system at Millmoor and soon built the reputation of a free scoring midifeld player and his tally of 31 goals in the 76-77 season is a club record for a midfielder making him a Millmoor legend

As well as scoring many, Crawford created a shed load of goals and he kept virtually injury free and managed 169 consecutive appearances for the club, a spell which saw him endure three seasons without missing a game.

Eventually Crawford left the club after a disagreement with the manager but even now he is remembered with heroic status.
