Breckin returns: The timeline

Last updated : 31 May 2007 By Millersmad Staff
January 23rd 2005: One month after new board Millers05 took control of the club, Ronnie Moore and John Breckin are told that their contracts will not be renewed at the end of the season and a severence package is negotiated. This news causes controversy at Millmoor and ends Breckin's ties with Rotherham where he has played, coached, managed on a caretaker basis and been involved in the clubs most successful era on the pitch for 20 years.

1st March 2005: After just six weeks out of work, Breckin renews his partnership with Moore as they take on the job of attempting to steer Oldham Athletic to safety in League One. Moore and Breckin continue to commute from their Rotherham homes.

August 2005: With the duo successfully keeping Oldham in League One, a summer of investment and the signing of four ex Rotherham players saw Oldham top the League One table in August. Four days later they lost 1-0 at Boundary Park to Mick Harford's Rotherham.
Got the number one job!

21st March 2006: Breckin returns to Millmoor with Oldham for the first time in an official capacity with his team chasing a play off place whilst Rotherham were ferociously battling relegation. Moore and Breckin got a rousing reception from the Rotherham faithful but were on the wrong end of a 2-0 defeat thanks to a Chris Swailes own goal and a Paul McLaren strike.

1st June 2006: Oldham's play off charge fell off and Oldham finished 10th in League One. A couple of weeks later Moore and Breckin were sacked on the grounds of financial reasons with the Oldham chairman claiming not enough people liked the duo enough to buy season tickets. Oldham replaced Moore with John Sheridan and Ronnie was immediately linked to his "first love" Tranmere Rovers.

9th June 2006: Once again Breckin was not unemployed for long as he continued his partnership with Moore who was appointed Tranmere Rovers manager just 8 days after his sacking from Boundary Park with the brief of gaining promotion from League One. Whilst Moore moved his family over to the Wirrall, Breckin who was having personal problems remained in Rotherham.

12th September 2006: Breckin once again returns to Millmoor for a game, but for the first time with Tranmere and once again he is on the losing side. Alan Knill's resrugent Rotherham side were in the middle of a great run and beat Tranmere 2-1 with Lee Williamson and Will Hoskins grabbing the vital goals.

1st January 2007: The new year finally gave Breckin a chance to celebrate as he and Ronnie got their revenge on Rotherham with a 2-1 win of their own. Rotherham would continue a slide that saw just one win in 17 games whilst Tranmere would battle for the play offs.
Would not name Breck!

6th April 2007: An eventful day unfolded when a press conference was held to reveal the club's new manager on Good Friday following the sacking of Alan Knill the previous month. Mark Robins was a surprise choice but there was more interest in the new assistant manager. The club would not be drawn in to who the new man would be, but it was believed to be the worst kept secret in football that John Breckin was the person in question with several media outlets going to press with the fact that Breckin would be the man.

Breckin added more confusion when he released a statement at Tranmere saying he was happy in his role at Prenton Park.

9th May 2007: With the season over and Tranmere missing out on a play off place, Breckin parted company with the club and there ended his 10 year managerial partnership with Ronnie Moore. With Breckin still living in Rotherham and his family recently suffering a tragic bereavment he wanted to be closer to home. Tranmere and Moore wished Breckin well and this cleared the path for him to return to Rotherham.

10th May 2007: As expected just over 24 hours after Breckin left Tranmere, Rotherham unveiled him as the new assistant to Mark Robins to end an eventful 2 and a half years away from Breckin's hometown club.
