Celebrations and Condolences

Juzza and his QPR lads are a sound set of supporters and hopefully we can get more and more games with them in the future. It was too much for a few of the younger QPR players who broke down and it was nice to see our old heads such as Paul Elliott go over and give them support.

Despite the winning, this sort of camaraderie and friendships built is what the tournament is all about. There could only be one winner but on the day both QPR and Rotherham showed that two active IFA sides proved that supporters from all around the country can come together in the true spirit of the game.

After a few rounds of “We are the champions” and “Championies” we had to drag our tired and now stiffening bodies back to Bodington Hall HQ to get presented with the cup. There was a feeling of amazement amongst not only the players but all the people who had supported us over the weekend. Never once did the IMFC players go without water or food when needed, there was always shade to go in and injuries were quickly attended to. The support from the sideline kept the legs going in times of need and we can’t thank these people enough for all their efforts.

Singing Rotherham songs on the way back to receive our trophy we heard a few fans at the bar outside reciprocating and singing along, it was Inter Milan who had won the “shield” for those teams who finished 3rd and 4th in the group stages. It was a nice touch and Luca’s men deserve a bit of silverware after some fantastic showings in the past few years at Worldnet.

The presentations were amazing, RC Lens picked up the team of tournament for their crazy funny antics around campus while the losing finalists QPR and Bradford got their runners up medals. The referees got some trophies and were booed by everyone in the presentation room. I didn’t quite agree with that despite the insane penalty given against us in the final. However, refs have a hard job and overall I thought they did well in the tournament. I guess the drama wouldn’t have been the same without a golden goal missed pen thrown in, albeit I personally could have killed the referee for that decision.

Then was the Man of the Match trophy for the final. It was probably between the man who scored the goals, Burnsy, and the main man in defence, Denti. In the end due to our constant defending it was rightly awarded to Denti who is one of the most solid and commanding defenders I have ever seen.

Before the lifting of the cup, I (Jebu) gave a short speech thanking QPR, sports interactive, the organisers, our supporters and those people who couldn’t make the tournament final day such as Yeard and Gilby. It was then handed over to Burnsy and Denti who together lifted the cup with Jebu and JV lurking behind with the biggest smiles in their lives on their faces.

Wind down and Champagne

After filling the cup with sparkling wine and spraying another bottle all over us outside Bodington Hall we took the celebrations to the Headingley Taps for a pint of beer. The dead legs were really starting to kick in and a few people who an hour or so ago were running around blocking tackles could now barely walk. A beer eased the bones slightly and after a little chat it was agreed we would all meet up in Rotherham at the Bluecoats for some celebratory beers.

RUFC vice chairman David Veal came along and kindly bought a couple bottles of champagne for the team on the night out. With the Worldnet Cup sitting proudly on our table we all talked the day over while drinking many a beers. It had not quite sank in that we had won the tournament but the over riding feeling was pride for RUFC and in our achievement. It was the perfect 40th birthday present for Dazza who has worked hard getting us fit over the summer.

As the night came to an end everyone took their very weary, slightly drunk bodies’ home to bed. IMFC will be back to defend their cup next year but the sequence of events that occurred in this tournament are one in a million. Well done to every single member of the squad and support staff, the weekend was a pleasure to be part of.
